Trump’s Government will not Exclude Undocumented Immigrants from Census

Court blocks Trump's request to remove undocumented immigrants from National Census

The National Census

The US Census Bureau is the entity in charge of conducting a survey every decade named the National Census. This survey is mandatory and the population must complete it regardless of their immigration status. 2020 is one of the census years.

Broadly speaking, the purpose of the census is to count how many people currently reside in the US, as well as to analyze changes in the population density of each state every 10 years and its relationship with the local economy.

With the information and figures obtained from the census, the US government must distribute monetary funds to every state and also distribute the number of seats in Congress.

To better understand the government’s task, it is important to clarify that each state is entitled to a certain number of representatives in Congress depending on its population density.

The Trump administration wanted to exclude undocumented immigrants from the census

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about how the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, wanted to remove undocumented immigrants from the census and exclude them from congressional count.

The Trump administration argues that if foreigners decide to cross the country’s borders without prior authorization and violate local law, then, they should not be part of any legal process such as the National Census.

In addition to that, President Trump also wanted to include a citizenship question in the census, which, in the opinion of dozens of activists, could threaten the privacy of undocumented immigrants and put their residency in the US at risk. This request was previously rejected by the Supreme Court of Justice.

Court blocks Trump’s request to exclude undocumented immigrants from the census

A New York court rejected the Trump administration’s request and declared that all residents of the US must participate in the National Census, regardless of their immigration status.

Federal judges argue that President Trump’s request is unlawful and could tremendously affect multiple states in the country that have a higher population density due to the number of undocumented immigrants residing there.

The court declares that removing them from the Census could modify and harm:

  • The funds that each state receives to invest in infrastructure, national security, education, socioeconomic development, inter alia, which depends on the population density.
  • The number of seats assigned to each state in Congress, which also depends on population density.

It is imperative to remember that the US currently has more than 10.5 million undocumented immigrants and since this number is quite high, it is essential for them to participate in the National Census to also analyze their role in the behavior of the local economy.
