Trump Wants to Exclude Undocumented Immigrants From Congressional Count

Trump states that undocumented aliens should not count for Congress seats

The last national census

Every 10 years, since 1790, the United States Census Bureau conducts a survey to determine population density and the behavior of the national economy.

This census has several main purposes:

  1. Count the number of people living in the US.
  2. Analyze the progress of the local economy depending on the population density of a specific region of the country.

With the results obtained, the US government can:

  1. Allocate monetary funds for each of the states depending on the population density.
  2. Invest in hospitals, the military, the police department, and welfare programs for local families who need it most.
  3. Determine how many representatives each state will have in Congress.

2020 is one of the years of the national census since the last one took place in 2010. Most of the country’s residents have already completed the census during the first semester of the year.

However, the Trump government wants to change certain Census processes and distribute congress seats with different rules than those established in recent decades.

President Trump wants to remove undocumented foreigners from the census

It all started when President Trump suggested including a citizenship question in the 2020 census. Because the Census details are absolutely private and the population’s personal information cannot be disclosed, the current government considers that including a citizenship question would not affect the results of the census.

After presenting its arguments, the US Supreme Court of Justice denied this request.

Now, on July 21, the Trump administration signed a memorandum stating that undocumented immigrants should not be taken into account to distribute congress seats.

In the memorandum, the president openly declares: “Excluding these illegal aliens from the distribution base is more in line with the principles of representative democracy that underpins our system of government”.

The president clarifies that it would be unfair to include undocumented immigrants since there are states that have a higher population density due to illegal immigration and that would give them the right to have more seats in Congress.

However, aside from this argument, President Trump also comments: “There used to be a time when you could proudly declare: ‘I am a citizen of the United States.’ But now, the radical left is trying to erase the existence of this concept and hide the number of illegal aliens in our country”.

Therefore, critics and activists around the country declare that this request is just one more attempt by the Trump administration to fulfill its “anti-immigration” agenda.

Avoid illegal immigration at all costs

Illegal immigration can generate irreversible consequences. It is important to understand that crossing borders without legal documentation does not allow you to obtain any social benefits from the government.

On top of that, there are many ways to apply for legal entry and residence in the US and there will always be a process for your specific case and immigration needs.
