Nepali TPS Beneficiaries Contribute to Socioeconomic Development

Survey shows that Nepali TPS holders are essential for the economy

TPS – Brief explanation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has the power to offer Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to countries experiencing natural disasters, ongoing armed conflict, epidemics, or any other risky situation that could endanger the lives of its citizens.

TPS offers protection against deportation and allows beneficiaries to apply for employment permits and reside in the US legally. The DHS also establishes the deadline and validity of TPS for countries protected by this immigration benefit.

Immigrants must meet certain mandatory requirements in order to apply for TPS, as outlined by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The Trump administration does not support TPS

The current president of the US, Donald Trump, has always wanted to reform the local immigration system, explaining that there are extensive social benefits for foreigners, which are diminishing possibilities for the American population.

Therefore, President Trump proposes to create a merit-based immigration system, rather than one based on family ties or humanitarian programs. That is why the current administration has tried to eradicate immigration benefits such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and TPS.

In fact, in mid-September 2020, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Trump administration and gave green light to remove TPS.

Activists raise their voices

Hundreds of activists, immigrant rights advocates, researchers, and TPS recipients raised their voices after the Court of Appeals verdict.

They led nationwide protests and stated that this program protects thousands of immigrants, who would face imminent threat in their countries if the Trump administration proceeds with its cancellation.

Survey shows contributions of Nepali TPS beneficiaries

A recent survey shows that TPS recipients from Nepal contribute greatly to the socioeconomic development of the US.

Institutions involved in the research are:

  • Center for American Progress.
  • Adhikaar.
  • The US Immigration Policy Center (University of California, San Diego)

The results show that the majority of Nepali TPS holders have applied for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which allows them to work legally in the US, boosting the local economy and stimulating important sectors such as the health system.

In fact, research reveals that a high percentage of Nepali have played a critical role in the battle against the global COVID-19 pandemic by being healthcare workers and helping the US overcome the current sanitary crisis.

In addition to that, the survey found that more than 80% of Nepali still fear returning to their country if the Trump administration decides to remove TPS due to ongoing armed conflict and health risk.

On the other hand, the survey reveals that Nepali TPS recipients “are making positive and significant economic contributions, including earning higher wages after receiving TPS, which translate into greater tax revenue and economic growth that benefits all Americans.”
