Legalizing Undocumented Immigrants is the Best Alternative

Study: Legalizing undocumented immigrants would boost the economy

National debate around undocumented immigrants

Among the American population, there has always been a gigantic debate about undocumented immigrants, that is, those who entered the country without prior authorization by crossing the borders unlawfully. It is worth mentioning that this term could also refer to foreigners who entered the US through a legitimate process, but who stayed in the country without renewing their permits. Currently, there are more than 10 million undocumented immigrants across the country, who are part of different communities and work in all kinds of sectors.

The reason why irregular immigration is quite a controversial issue is because there are multiple opinions among the local population, including different political parties and members of the government, about how to address and approach the situation. On the one hand, a part of the population considers that undocumented immigrants should have access to legalization since they contribute to the economy and are essential workers. On the other hand, a part of the population states that undocumented immigrants violated local law and, therefore, should not have a path to legal residence.

The debate around immigrants residing in the US undocumented has grown even more recently as the current administration, led by President Joe Biden, introduced an immigration bill earlier this year, which, if passed by Congress, would open a path to legal residence for millions of undocumented foreigners.

Study: Legalizing undocumented immigrants would boost the economy

According to a recent study by the Center for American Progress, offering a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants in the US is an essential step for the country to recover from the economic crisis brought on by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The Center for American Progress explains that the economic, social, political and cultural contribution of undocumented immigrants is quite impactful among the American social fabric and mentions that a large number of recent surveys reveal the support of the local population towards the legalization of undocumented foreigners.

Other than that, the study reveals that legalizing undocumented immigrants would exponentially boost the economy over the next decade. Let’s look at some important findings:

  • If Congress supports the Biden administration’s ideal of legalizing all undocumented immigrants in the US, that would create about 438,800 new jobs over the next 10 years and there would be a $1.7 trillion increase in GDP (Gross Domestic Product ).
  • If Congress decides to legalize only undocumented immigrants who are essential workers, that would create about 203,200 new jobs over the next 10 years and there would be a $989 billion increase in GDP.

As a conclusion of the study, the Center for American Progress states that “Undocumented immigrants are longtime members of their communities, and the nation as a whole, and have made significant economic contributions. By putting them on a pathway to citizenship, Congress and the administration can turn those contributions into massive gains for the entire economy and for all workers”.
