Increasing Immigration Will Protect the Future of the US Economy

What would the US’ economy be without immigrants?

In one of our most recent articles, we talked about a research recently conducted by FWD.US and George Mason University, which reveals that if the US does not increase immigration levels in the short to medium term, it will no longer have the world’s largest economy in less than a decade.

This is because not only is the economic system highly dependent on foreign workforce, but other factors such as the local birth rate also contribute to a gradual decline in the working-age population.

Therefore, the research concludes that, for the US not to lose its international competitiveness, the federal government must implement welcoming immigration policies to attract talent from abroad and adopt a simpler and easily accessible immigration system for populations that contribute greatly to the local economy such as international students and highly skilled foreign workers.

In fact, on April 19, Justin Gest, one of the researchers gave his opinion about the results of the investigation in a CNN report, openly stating that “if immigration remained at near-zero levels, within decades, the country could be older, smaller and poorer. But if the US government welcomed more newcomers, within decades, the country could be younger, more productive and richer.”

To clarify this assertion, Gest explained that administrations like Trump’s could tremendously affect the country’s socioeconomic development by trying to reduce immigration levels.

Why did former President Trump want to reduce immigration?

Immigration levels in the US are usually quite high. This is because it is not only the destination of thousands of foreigners who dream of building a promising future in the North American territory, but the local economic system has also found great strength in foreign workforce, which in turn increases cultural diversity, racial integration, and international competitiveness.

However, despite the fact that throughout history immigration has played an essential role in the economic growth of local companies, in important sectors such as science and technology and in entrepreneurial projects that create thousands of jobs for the American population, there are still administrations that do not support immigration.

For instance, between 2017 and 2021, foreign communities experienced truly difficult and challenging circumstances under the Donald Trump administration, which used all the executive power, resources and tools at its disposal to curb irregular immigration and limit legal immigration.

Regarding employment-based alternatives, former President Trump argued that foreign workers often take away opportunities from local workers by accepting lower wages. However, this is a conjecture that has been contradicted multiple times by experts and extensive research results.
