House Passes two Bills that would Benefit Undocumented Immigrants

On Thursday, March 18, 2021, the US House of Representatives passed two immigration bills, which would benefit a large number of immigrants currently residing in the country undocumented.

These two immigration bills were reintroduced by several members of the House of Representatives:

1. Immigration bill that would benefit young immigrants

In early March 2021, three House Democrats reintroduced the “American Dream and Promise Act,” which would outline a path to legal permanent residence and eventually citizenship for immigrants brought to the US as minors, known as “Dreamers.”

Adding to that, this immigration bill would also include beneficiaries of deportation relief programs such as DED (Deferred Enforced Departure) and TPS (Temporary Protected Status).

The House passed this proposal with a total vote of 228-197 and would protect approximately 2.5 million Dreamers.

2. Immigration bill that would benefit foreign farmworkers

Also in early March, two bipartisan members of the House reintroduced the “Farm Workforce Modernization Act,” which offers a path to legal status for undocumented farmworkers. Under this Act, they could initially apply for CAW (Certified Agricultural Worker) status and, so long as they meet eligibility requirements, they could apply for legal permanent residence.

The House passed this proposal with a total vote of 247-174 and would benefit at least 1.2 million foreign farmworkers.

This decision by the House of Representatives opens a door of hope for immigrant communities in the US, which had to go through difficult situations under the Donald Trump administration.

However, it is important to clarify that the US Congress has two branches, the House of Representatives and the Senate, and any immigration bill needs to be approved by both branches before being officially implemented. Therefore, these two immigration bills still need Senate approval.

Biden Supports House-Passed Immigration Bills

Since President Joe Biden launched his political campaign for the November 2020 elections, he has constantly emphasized the need to reform the entire immigration system and implement policies consistent with current global needs.

Therefore, since Biden took office in late January 2021, his team has tried to restructure the immigration sector by removing the Trump administration’s restrictions and proposing new alternatives to have a different approach to immigration. In fact, the Biden administration recently introduced an immigration bill, which is currently under congressional review and, if passed, would promote the first comprehensive immigration overhaul since the 80s.

Adding to that, several members of the US House of Representatives have also introduced or reintroduced immigration bills, taking advantage of the fact that the Biden administration supports the ideal of improving the local immigration system. That is the case with immigration bills passed by the House this week.

In fact, President Joe Biden issued two statements on March 18, supporting both the “American Dream and Promise Act,” and the “Farm Workforce Modernization Act.”
