Biden Supports House-Approved Immigration Bills

President Biden supports house-passed immigration proposals

House of Representatives Opens Door of Hope for Immigrant Communities

The two branches of Congress, the US House of Representatives and the Senate, are currently reviewing multiple bills related to the immigration sector. Since President Joe Biden took office, his administration has tried to restructure the immigration system through multiple proposals and plans to promote comprehensive immigration overhaul.

Aside from Biden’s immigration bill, Congress is also reviewing other immigration proposals introduced by several members of the House. In fact, for the benefit of immigrant communities, on March 18, the House of Representatives passed two immigration bills introduced in early March.

On the one hand, the “American Dream and Promise Act” offers a path to legal status for “Dreamers,” who are young immigrants who came to the US as children and without legal documentation. Under this Act, they would have the possibility to apply for conditional permanent residence for 10 years, and, if they meet mandatory requirements, then they could eventually apply for American citizenship.

Adding to that, this Act also outlines a path to legal status for beneficiaries of TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or DED (Deferred Enforced Departure), two deportation relief programs.

On the other hand, the “Farm Workforce Modernization Act” offers a path to legal status for foreign farmworkers, who do not have legal documentation and are an essential part of the US food supply chain.

Immigrant communities celebrate this news and hope the Senate will pass these immigration bills as well.

President Biden supports house-passed immigration proposals

It is well known that the Biden administration has a rather welcoming view when it comes to immigrant populations. In fact, the president has stated on multiple occasions that the US needs the presence of immigrants to be able to boost the economy in times of crisis and that the country finds its international competitiveness in racial diversity and social inclusion.

On March 18, President Biden issued two statements supporting the two immigration bills approved by the US House of Representatives.

The president openly stated that both Dreamers and beneficiaries of programs like TPS are also essential workers who keep the economy afloat and many of them have been on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19. Adding to that, Biden states that “The American Dream and Promise Act of 2021 is a critical first step in reforming our immigration system (…) My Administration looks forward to working together with Congress to do the right thing for Dreamers and TPS holders.”

Adding to that, President Biden also commented on foreign farmworkers, stating that they, regardless of whether they are undocumented or not, are vital for the local population and work tirelessly to bring food to the table of American families, even if they don’t have access to social benefits amid the global Coronavirus pandemic. Hence, “This is why I (President Biden) support the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2021 and celebrate its passage. The Act will deliver the lawful status and better working conditions that this critical workforce deserves.”
