USCIS Opens Registration Period for TPS for Syria

USCIS Opens Registration Period for TPS for Syria

The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has the power to grant protection against deportation to nationals of certain countries through an immigration benefit called TPS (Temporary Protected Status). Countries designated by DHS are usually territories experiencing precarious situations such as extreme weather conditions, ongoing armed conflict or epidemics, which could put the integrity of immigrants deported from the US at risk.

On Thursday, March 18, 2021, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) announced that it will extend and re-design TPS for migrants from Syria, who must meet certain eligibility requirements.

Syria’s TPS designation will run for 18 months from March 31, 2021 to September 30, 2022. DHS had already announced this decision on January 29, 2021, but it was not yet official.

How does the TPS extension for Syrian nationals work?

Migrants from Syria who are currently residing in the US and are already TPS beneficiaries will have the opportunity to request a TPS extension.

Adding to that, Syrian TPS beneficiaries may also request the extension of their EAD (Employment Authorization Document) until September 30, 2022, so long as they complete the re-registration process within dates established by the USCIS and meet the mandatory requirements.

The 60-day registration period will take place from March 19 to May 18, 2021.

How does the TPS re-designation for Syrian nationals work?

Aside from the TPS extension for Syria, the USCIS will receive new applications from Syrian migrants continuously residing in the US since Friday, March 19, 2021. Other than that, applicants must meet TPS eligibility requirements and must be continuously present (physically) in the country since March 31, 2021.

The re-designation of Syria for TPS allows Syrian nationals, who are not TPS beneficiaries and continuously reside in the US since March 19, to apply for TPS for the first time in a 180-day period, beginning March 19 until September 15, 2021.

It is worth mentioning that TPS extension for Syrian nationals will benefit approximately 6,700 people and the re-designation will benefit approximately 1,800 migrants from Syria.
