Harris Talks to AMLO to Address Mass Irregular Migration

Vice President Harris speaks with Mexican President about mass migration

Irregular migration threatens Biden’s projects

One of the Biden administration’s main goals is to restructure the immigration system and implement more humane policies, in line with current international needs. However, since February 2021, certain agencies such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) have reported a substantial increase in illegal border crossings.

Since President Biden has a fairly welcoming stance on immigration in general, the surge of border apprehensions allows opposition groups and certain members of Congress to blame his administration for incentivizing and increasing irregular immigration, although it is not entirely the case.

As a result of the surge of illegal crossings, the Biden administration has been unable to move forward with its immigration proposals, including an immigration bill that would lead to comprehensive reform, nor has it had the possibility of improving legal immigration programs to boost the economy with the help of foreign workers and international students.

Vice President Harris is in charge of improving the current border situation

To efficiently handle the situation at the borders and illegal crossings, especially when it comes to unaccompanied immigrant minors, President Biden directed Vice President Kamala Harris to deal with the increase in irregular immigration and create strategies to find and address the root causes of mass migration.

Vice President Harris has already taken several steps to reduce irregular migration from Central America, where local conditions force thousands of people to migrate to North America regardless of the US’ administration and its immigration policies.

Harris openly states that improving the current situation does not only depend on stricter border policies to enforce immigration law, but that there must also be international cooperation to improve the quality of life of Central American citizens and thus reduce crime, violence and famine rates in certain countries, especially those located in the so-called Northern Triangle of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador).

In fact, following President Biden’s order, Harris recently spoke with the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei. They discussed mainly about current conditions in the Central American countries, the factors forcing thousands of people to migrate to the US and what will be the regional integration strategies to reduce massive irregular migration.

Vice President Harris speaks with Mexican President about mass migration

Following her action plan, Vice President Harris spoke on Wednesday, April 7 with the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (known as AMLO). They also commented on massive irregular migration and “the importance of the bilateral relationship with Mexico.”

Regarding immigration, the relationship between the US and Mexico is far from relationships with other Central American countries because, to reach the US, migrants usually enter Mexico without legal documentation. Therefore, creating strategies with Mexico to address the root causes of mass migration is an essential step in improving the current border situation and reducing the number of illegal crossings.
