Vice President Harris Dialogues with Guatemala to Address Irregular Immigration

Biden assigns Vice President Harris to handle the situation at the borders

The current situation at the US border is putting at risk immigration plans of the new administration, led by President Joe Biden, who took office on January 20, 2021. By this, we refer to the surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since the beginning of February and apprehension statistics reported by border entities such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection).

To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that the Biden administration plans to promote the first comprehensive immigration reform since the 80s and, in fact, has already introduced a fairly broad immigration bill, which is currently under congressional review.

However, the growing number of undocumented immigrants trying to cross the US borders without prior authorization is delaying Biden’s immigration plans and sparking a colossal controversy among the American public.

Therefore, the Biden administration, to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and to protect its immigration bill, is using all the tools at its disposal to curb mass irregular immigration and increase surveillance at the borders.

In fact, President Biden recently announced that the person in charge of addressing the current border situation is Vice President Kamala Harris, who did not wait long to begin taking appropriate action to control the surge of illegal border crossings.

Harris is already following President Biden’s order regarding irregular immigration

On Tuesday, March 30, 2021, Vice President Harris and Guatemala’s President, Alejandro Giammattei, discussed by phone about irregular immigration and the root causes that force thousands of Central American citizens to migrate to the US seeking employment opportunities and economic stability.

Vice President Harris states that the best solution to curb mass irregular migration is to improve the quality of life of Central American citizens, who would not have to flee their countries if local conditions were different, if they were not constantly threatened by precarious situations such as the famine, violence, corruption or war.

According to the White House official statement, “Vice President Harris and President Giammattei agreed to collaborate on promoting economic development, leveraging technology, strengthening climate resilience, and creating the conditions to expand opportunity for people in their home countries in order to address the root causes of migration to the United States.”

Adding to that, President Giammattei asked Harris to grant TPS (Temporary Protected Status) to Guatemalans currently residing in the US, which is a deportation relief program. The Guatemalan president also invited the vice president to visit the Central American country.
