Democratic Senators Pressure Biden to Increase Refugee Limit

Senators urge Biden to receive more refugees during fiscal year 2021

The lowest number of refugees in recent history

It was always clear that former President Donald Trump had the firm intention of reducing immigration by all possible means, arguing that the massive influx of foreigners affects American workers and diminishes the quality of life in the US, a premise that has been contradicted by dozens of experts and critics.

Using rather alarming and almost never substantiated conjectures and assertions, the Trump administration substantially limited and restricted immigration in the US from 2017 until early 2021, when current President Joe Biden took office.

One of Trump’s purposes regarding the immigration sector was to narrow humanitarian alternatives, that is, programs such as political asylum and refuge, which are available to communities in need of international protection. Instead, his administration planned to implement a merit-based immigration system.

For instance, speaking specifically about the refugee process, the federal government must set an annual refugee limit for each fiscal year (FY / October-September). The Trump administration lowered the refugee limit for FY 2021 to 15,000, which is the lowest number of refugees in recent history.

Biden has yet to raise the refugee limit

President Biden promised to increase the refugee limit for FY 2021 to 62,500. However, he has now been in office for 100 days and has yet to increase the number of refugees admitted in the US.

In fact, the Biden administration recently went through a gigantic social controversy as it stated that it would keep Trump’s refugee limit for the rest of the FY, but after receiving countless criticism, it stated that it still plans to increase the refugee cap in mid-May.

Senators urge Biden to receive more refugees during fiscal year 2021

Since Biden has yet to raise the refugee limit, as he promised during his political campaign and after winning the November 2020 election, a group of more than 30 Democratic senators are urging his administration to admit more refugees in the remainder of FY 2021.

The Senators sent a letter asking President Biden to raise the refugee cap to 62,500 for the current FY and fulfill a promise to increase this number again to 125,000 beginning in FY 2022, which would be the highest refugee limit in recent history.

Supporting their request, the Senators openly stated that “The United States must reject the previous administration’s cruel legacy of anti-refugee policies and return to our long-standing bipartisan tradition of providing safety to the world’s most vulnerable refugees.”
