Biden Asks Congress to Support Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Biden emphasized the need to pass immigration reform in Congress

Biden’s first address to Congress

On Wednesday, April 28, President Biden had his first address to Congress as part of the regular protocol as he already served his first 100 days in office. The Democratic president, who has led the White House since the end of January, commented on several important sectors such as the health system in the midst of the global Coronavirus pandemic, the growth of the economy in times of crisis, the social fabric and discrimination, immigration and the current border situation, inter alia.

President Biden, in addition to openly exposing the impact of his administration on different current situations, also emphasized the actions that Congress must take to pass certain bills and the need to find bipartisan support to strengthen the US as a nation and not as separate political parties.

Biden emphasized the need to pass immigration reform in Congress

Among the many issues President Biden raised during his first address to Congress, he also included immigration, an extremely controversial sector, even more so now that there is a surge of illegal border crossings.

It is no secret that the Biden administration is quite welcoming when it comes to immigrant communities and strongly supports the ideal of expanding legal immigration to be able to reduce mass irregular immigration.

In fact, during his first days in office, President Biden unveiled a rather ambitious immigration bill, which includes, among many other things, a technology-based border protection system, a path to citizenship for eligible undocumented immigrants, expanding alternatives for foreign workers, permanent solutions for young immigrants who came to the US as children, inter alia.

However, there is currently such a huge debate within Congress (both in the US House of Representatives and the Senate), that there is no agreement whatsoever regarding Biden’s immigration bill, which, if passed, would lead to comprehensive immigration reform.

Thus, during his speech, President Biden stressed the importance of having bipartisan support to “end our exhausting war over immigration”. Adding to that, Biden was quite open about the idea of initially passing certain parts of his comprehensive immigration bill, in fact, the president stated, “If you don’t like my plan, let’s at least pass what we all agree on”.

President Biden, among other things, commented on the importance of offering permanent solutions to essential workers and immigrants who are part of the social fabric such as:

  • So-called Dreamers (immigrants who were brought to the US as minors).
  • Beneficiaries of TPS (Temporary Protected Status), a deportation relief program.
  • Undocumented farmworkers.

Therefore, after this speech, President Biden hopes that Congress, especially members of the Senate, will come together to support his immigration plans and promote comprehensive immigration reform.
