The Trump Administration Lowers Refugee Limit by 16%

Trump government reduced refugee limit to only 15.000

The annual refugee limit in the US

The US is the destination of thousands of immigrants who try to flee the danger of their countries through programs such as political asylum or refuge. Since the US is a first world nation and a world power, its immigration system has multiple humanitarian programs that aim to offer international protection to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Immigrants can request refuge when they are outside the US and have been victims of persecution, either because of their race, religion, political opinion, sexual orientation, inter alia.

Annually, the US government must announce what the refugee limit will be for the following fiscal year (October-September). Immigrant rights advocates and immigrant communities have been waiting for the past few months, mainly because the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, disagrees with allowing large numbers of refugees.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about how the Trump administration waited until last minute to define the refugee limit for fiscal year 2021.

The Trump administration lowers refugee limit to just 15,000

On Thursday, October 1 was the deadline for the refugee limit, therefore, the Trump government announced that, under the premise of the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, only 15,000 refugees will be allowed to enter the US during the fiscal year 2021, which represents a decrease of 16% compared to last year.

This is the lowest limit in recent history of the US. Last year, the Trump administration allowed 18,000 refugees, while his predecessor, Barack Obama, allowed 100,000 refugees annually during his term.

This is a record for the US and could spark a new legal battle between the Trump administration and activists, critics, immigration attorneys and immigrant rights advocates.
