Trump Administration Has Not Announced Refugee Limit for Next Fiscal Year

Trump administration has yet to set refugee cap for 2021 fiscal year

The refugee process in the US

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), immigrants can apply for refuge, which is part of the humanitarian programs offered by the local immigration system, if they currently reside outside the country (both their countries and the US) and need international protection.

Immigrants must demonstrate that if they return to their countries they could be victims of persecution, either because of their race, religion, political opinion, sexual orientation, inter alia. They must also meet certain requirements to be admissible in the US.

This is a fairly comprehensive humanitarian program because if the USCIS approves refugee applications, immigrants will receive monetary assistance to enter the US. In addition to that, they can receive medical assistance at no extra cost.

Refugees also have the possibility to request family members to come to the country and request legal residence permits.

What is the refugee limit?

Annually, the President of the US has the duty to announce what the refugee limit will be for the following fiscal year (October-September).

The Trump administration is characterized by its intention to reduce the number of immigrants entering the country, both illegally and legally. In fact, the current administration ensures that immigrants, especially those who request humanitarian services such as refuge or political asylum, tend to use local benefits disproportionately and destabilize the local economic system.

As a result, the Trump administration lowered the refugee limit during fiscal year 2020 to 18,000, the lowest number since 1980.

The Trump administration has yet to announce the limit for fiscal year 2021

We are just a couple of days away from next fiscal year, and the Trump administration has yet to announce what the refugee limit will be for 2021.

The Trump administration officials stated, on  multiple occasions, that the refugee limit may be even lower due to the health crisis generated by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

However, until now, President Trump has not announced the refugee cap for the following fiscal year and there is growing concern among activists and immigrant rights advocates, who request a prompt response from the government for immigrant communities in need of international protection.
