Immigration application fees and the USCIS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is divided into several branches, each serving different purposes. For instance, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the branch of DHS in charge of receiving, reviewing, and responding to the country’s immigration applications.

This federal entity processes applications for family immigration, business immigration, political asylum, inter alia. Applicants must submit the required documentation and fill out the relevant forms for the USCIS to review the requests.

The USCIS is one of the few federal agencies that relies almost entirely on fees that applicants must pay when submitting an immigration request. It means that the USCIS income depends on the number of applications it receives.

What happened after the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic?

It is well known that one of the emergency measures implemented by most countries around the world, including the US, was to close borders and suspend immigration during the health crisis, avoiding the import and export of the COVID-19 through borders.

Since the USCIS revenue relies on immigration application fees, naturally, this agency suffered a devastating downturn in revenue, which threatened nearly 70% of its employees during the current juncture.

Nowadays, after more than four months since the health crisis arrived, the immigration agency declared that it will not furlough its employees, but that it will increase immigration application fees as of October 2, 2020, a day after the next fiscal year begins (October-September).

In fact, the USCIS had announced increases in early August, after asking Congress for monetary aid to protect the salaries of its employees.

It is important to clarify that apart from the increase in immigration fees, some forms have also changed and it is essential for applicants to follow established guidelines to avoid a possible rejection by the USCIS.
