Biden Meets with Dreamers to Discuss Permanent Solutions

DACA Recipients Meet with President Biden

DACA Recipients Meet with President Biden

On Friday, May 14, 2021, current President of the US, Joe Biden, met with six DACA recipients to discuss permanent solutions for them in lieu of temporary protection against deportation.

According to the White House statement, “President Biden reiterated his support for Dreamers, TPS holders, farmworkers, and other essential immigrant workers. The President and the Dreamers also discussed the continued need for immigration reform”.

Adding to that, President Biden also expects bipartisan support in the Senate to pass two immigration bills that are currently under review, which have already been approved by the US House of Representatives, and which, if passed, would protect eligible Dreamers and other essential workers and outline a path to lawful permanent residence and eventually citizenship.

DACA – Relief from Deportation

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is a deportation relief program available to certain young immigrants who were brought to the US without legal documentation as minors, known as Dreamers. In fact, many of them do not remember anything about their countries of origin and have built their lives in North America.

This immigration benefit offers eligible Dreamers protection against deportation for two years with the possibility of extension, and, thanks to this program, they can also work, study and access other social services.

DACA’s future is still uncertain

Despite the fact that DACA protects young immigrants who have become an essential part of the local workforce, this program is currently at risk and underwent an almost endless legal battle under the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021).

Broadly speaking, former President Trump always tried to eradicate DACA to reduce irregular immigration and “send a clear message” to immigrant communities about the consequences of crossing borders without prior authorization. After multiple legal processes, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of DACA recipients in June 2020, but the Trump administration did not fully comply with this verdict until a lower court ordered it again to re-implement DACA in December 2020.

However, aside from the Trump administration’s legal battle against DACA recipients, this immigration program already had a hearing scheduled in a Texas court at the end of December 2020 due to a lawsuit requesting a comprehensive review of this immigration benefit to determine whether it is valid or unconstitutional. In March 2021, the judge in charge of the case postponed the ruling and DACA is still in limbo.

Therefore, DACA recipients and Dreamers in general expect the Biden administration to offer them permanent protection, especially since they are essential workers in all sorts of sectors and continually drive the economy.
