Biden Expects Bipartisan Support to Move Forward with Immigration Policies

The Biden administration expects Bipartisan support for immigration reform

Immigration bills under congressional review

Since President Biden took office in late January 2021, his administration has focused on reforming the entire immigration system and proposing different strategies and action plans to remove restrictive policies of his predecessor Donald Trump and gradually expand existing immigration programs to benefit the local economy with the help of foreign workforce and offer international assistance to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

So far, the Biden administration has used multiple resources at its disposal to restructure current immigration measures and promote comprehensive immigration overhaul. However, the executive branch of the president and his team goes up to a certain point, and, to implement broader policies or change certain immigration processes, the Biden administration needs support from Congress for its proposals to become law.

Thus, there are currently multiple immigration bills under review by the branches of Congress, both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. On the one hand, the Biden administration introduced a rather ambitious immigration bill, which ranges from vulnerable populations such as asylum seekers to undocumented immigrants, foreign farmworkers and international students.

On the other hand, many immigration bills that are currently under review have been introduced and reintroduced by different bipartisan members of Congress. In fact, the House of Representatives has already approved some of these proposals and are currently under Senate review.

The Biden administration expects Bipartisan support for immigration reform

With multiple immigration bills still under congressional review amid a gigantic social controversy related to the immigration sector and a growing number of undocumented foreigners apprehended at the US borders, dozens of critics and activists are asking the Biden administration to clarify what its next plans are when it comes to the immigration system or whether it is looking at speeding up its immigration bill in Congress through reconciliation.

To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that reconciliation is a process that allows the US administration to expedite the approval of certain legislation in the Senate.

Regarding its immigration bill, the Biden administration does not plan to use reconciliation as a means to promote comprehensive immigration reform and expedite the process in Congress. In fact, press secretary Jen Psaki stated on Wednesday April 21 that “the conversation should not be about a reconciliation process; it should be about moving forward in a bipartisan manner.”

The Biden administration states that it is important to receive bipartisan support from both branches of Congress to move forward with its proposals and to be able to restructure the entire immigration system over the next four years without using other resources and tools such as reconciliation.
