Young immigrants wait for Congress to pass proposals that favor them

The Biden administration has promised several permanent solutions for thousands of young immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented. Many of them were brought to the country when they were minors and are commonly known as Dreamers.

Despite President Biden’s immigration plans, his administration is facing several challenges due to a surge of illegal border crossings and the current controversy in Congress over his immigration proposals, including opinions of different political parties and opposition groups.

However, dozens of young immigrants still hope that the Biden administration can carry out its immigration plan, taking into account that they are also essential workers who are part of all kinds of sectors. They also hope that Congress will pass Biden’s immigration bill, which would offer them a path to legal permanent residence and eventually citizenship.

It is worth mentioning that many young immigrants awaiting radical changes under the Biden administration are currently recipients of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a deportation relief program implemented by the Obama administration in 2012 to benefit eligible Dreamers, who also have the opportunity to apply for employment authorization permits under this program.

This immigration benefit was on a tightrope during Donald Trump’s term (2017-2021), leaving more than 600,000 DACA-covered Dreamers in limbo. Therefore, they hope that the Biden administration will offer them a path to legal permanent status and not just temporary benefits.

House of Representatives has already passed two immigration bills

Congress has two branches, the US House of Representatives and the Senate. For any immigration bill to become law and be officially implemented, both branches of Congress must pass the proposal.

For the benefit of immigrant communities, the House of Representatives passed two immigration bills last week, which would greatly benefit Dreamers and undocumented farmworkers if passed by the Senate.

Congress has yet to review Biden’s immigration bill

Despite the fact that the House of Representatives has already passed two recently reintroduced immigration bills, Congress has yet to review Biden’s immigration bill, which is quite comprehensive and would lead to immigration reform.

In fact, one of the Biden administration’s proposals is to offer immediate legal permanent residence (Green Card) to eligible Dreamers, who would also have the opportunity to apply for American citizenship in the future, so long as they meet certain mandatory requirements.
