What Do Americans Think About the Path to Citizenship?

What is the opinion of the local population regarding the path to citizenship?

Path to Citizenship – A Controversy that Never Stops

Immigration has always been a controversial topic in the US, but the focus of this social debate is primarily related to irregular immigration, border security, immigration law enforcement and foreigners currently residing in the country undocumented.

Over the past several decades, more specifically since the mid-1980s when Congress passed the last comprehensive immigration reform, several administrations have tried to restructure the immigration system again through different immigration bills and other executive actions to push for a new immigration reform, one that suits today’s global needs.

One of the main aspects of immigration reform, at least the one currently being promoted by the Biden administration, is to open a path to legal residency and even American citizenship for eligible undocumented immigrants, especially when it comes to young people who were brought to the US as minors, undocumented farm workers and other essential foreign workers.

What is the opinion of the local population regarding the path to citizenship?

An ongoing survey conducted by Civiqs since December 2016 has been analyzing the American population’s opinion regarding the path to citizenship for immigrants residing in the country undocumented. As of August 16, 2021, there were 245,472 responses to the survey. It is worth clarifying that this survey includes people as young as 18 years old, who can be Republicans, Democrats or Independents, as well as men and women.

Currently, 52% of respondents think the country should offer a path to citizenship for undocumented foreigners and 38% of respondents think they should be deported (77% Republican).

Americans’ opinion changed after the presidential election

At this point we are going to talk about another issue that has influenced the American population’s opinion regarding the path to citizenship; the border situation. The US is experiencing the most alarming surge of illegal border crossings in decades, which intensified when President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.

According to Civiqs survey results, support by local citizens for a path to citizenship has declined since the November 2020 presidential election and this could be strongly related to the current border situation.

In November 2020, 58% of respondents supported offering a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and 31% supported deportation for them. Thus, the numbers have changed substantially despite the fact that there is a Democratic administration leading the White House.
