The Biden Administration Sends a Message to the Migrant Caravan

The Biden government recommends the migrant caravan not to come to the US

The first migrant caravan of 2021 has almost 9,000 people

The first migrant caravan of 2021 left Honduras, heading to the US, on Friday, January 15 and currently has approximately 9,000 people, a fairly high number compared to other caravans. Immigrants state that they were forced to leave their country due to lack of resources, employment and quality of life. They declare that the local government does nothing to protect their lives even though they do not have job or economic stability to survive or at least to have access to basic resources.

It is important to clarify that the Central American territory is going through a gigantic crisis. The massive outbreak of Coronavirus worsened the economic situation in several Central American countries, skyrocketed the unemployment rate, increased famine and sparked a social controversy. Other than that, several hurricanes recently hit the Central American territory, which also worsened the pre-existing crisis.

Adding to that, the fact that the American population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the 46th president of the US also opens a door of hope for immigrant families, who state that the incoming government could offer them better opportunities to apply for international protection through political asylum.

It is no secret that one of the most important aspects of Biden’s political identity is multicultural inclusion and immigration. Therefore, his administration promised to improve conditions and opportunities for asylum seekers, who have faced precarious situations under the Trump administration.

The Biden government recommends the migrant caravan not to come to the US

Although the president-elect is quite welcoming when it comes to immigration, he has also emphasized that changes to the immigration system must be gradual, harmonious, and assertive to avoid a social and migratory crisis within the US. Biden’s team plans to gradually restructure immigration legal processes, including political asylum, to also protect American citizens and avoid social division between the local population and immigrant communities.

Regarding the migrant caravan from Honduras, a senior Biden transition official sent a message to immigrants planning to reach the borders of the US during Biden’s first days in office: “Don’t come now. The situation at the border isn’t going to be transformed overnight (…) (They) need to understand they’re not going to be able to come into the United States immediately.”

The Biden administration wants to improve the political asylum process and lift Trump’s restrictions. However, making these changes abruptly could tremendously destabilize the local immigration system and worsen the current health and economic crisis.

Adding to that, the Biden administration also has other plans and strategies to help Central American governments reduce immigration by improving the quality of life for their inhabitants and offering more public benefits to control irregular immigration.

Central American governments try to stop migrant caravan

Central American governments are trying to stop the migrant caravan. The governments of Guatemala and Mexico are sending military forces to the borders to prevent thousands of immigrants from entering their territories without legal documentation and to protect the population during the sanitary emergency.

It is imperative to follow legal parameters when starting an immigration journey. In this way, you protect your beloved ones, avoid precarious situations, may apply for social benefits, and can build a promising future in the US without constant fear of deportation.
