Guatemalan Authorities Try to Stop the Migrant Caravan

Migrant caravan heading to the US

The crisis unleashed in Central America by the global Coronavirus pandemic and several natural disasters is forcing thousands of families to seek opportunities to migrate to the US. In fact, on Friday, January 15, the first migrant caravan of 2021 left Honduras and reached Guatemala’s borders with approximately 9,000 people.

They plan to cross the borders of Guatemala and Mexico to reach the US and request international protection through political asylum or other humanitarian programs. According to the testimony of dozens of Honduran families, local governments do not offer them help or support in the midst of the climate and health crisis and, therefore, they must migrate to protect their beloved ones and seek employment opportunities to build a different future in the US.

It is important to remember that this migrant caravan is taking place just before Democratic nominee Joe Biden takes office as President of the US on January 20, 2021. Several experts state that Biden’s immigration proposals influenced the decision of Central American families to seek immigration alternatives in North America.

The Biden administration is quite welcoming when it comes to immigration and has promised to help the most vulnerable immigrant communities, such as asylum seekers. However, the president-elect has also been quite clear regarding the fact that changes to the immigration system and the political asylum process will not take less than six months.

Guatemala tries to stop undocumented immigrants

On Saturday, January 16, the Guatemalan government sent soldiers to the country’s borders to stop the migrant caravan coming from Honduras. However, the confrontation between Guatemalan forces and immigrants was quite strong and soldiers had to use tear gas to disperse immigrants who wanted to enter the country without authorization.

The president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, asked the government of Honduras to use the tools at its disposal to prevent illegal immigration from its territory. In fact, he stated: “The government of Guatemala regrets this violation of national sovereignty and calls on the governments of Central America to take measures to avoid putting their inhabitants at risk amid the health emergency due to the pandemic.”

The Guatemalan authorities plan to return thousands of immigrants to Honduras to avoid the massive spread of COVID-19 in the Central American and North American territory, and to make sure that people crossing the borders have legal documentation and a Coronavirus test.

The Mexican government also sent military troops and members of the National Guard to the country’s southern borders to prevent the migrant caravan from reaching the US without legal documentation in the midst of a health emergency.
