Senators Call for Answers About DACA Application Delays

Senators send letter due to delays in DACA applications

The USCIS has been receiving DACA applications for several months now

Tuesday, June 15, was the 9th anniversary of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the only immigration program that offers relief from deportation to young people known as Dreamers, who are foreigners who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.

Clearly, thousands of Dreamers have resided in the US for decades and have become an active part of the local workforce and many of them are essential workers in extremely important sectors of the national market.

DACA is an immigration benefit that protects eligible Dreamers from deportation for two years with the possibility of extension and allows them to obtain employment authorization. However, DACA was in a gigantic legal battle under the Trump administration, which tried to remove this program by all means possible.

In December 2020, after multiple litigation and in the midst of a seemingly endless legal process, a court ordered the Trump administration to reinstate DACA with its original parameters (established by the Obama administration in 2012) and to receive new applications.

Therefore, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services), which is the entity in charge of processing immigration cases in the country, is already receiving new DACA applications, but there are quite considerable delays.

Senators send letter due to delays in DACA applications

During DACA’s anniversary, a group of Democratic Senators sent a letter to USCIS, asking for answers and explanations about the delays in DACA applications. The senators involved state that “DACA processing delays have significant consequences, not just for individuals depending on the status for their livelihoods and security, but for their families and for the businesses and workplaces that employ them”.

Adding to that, the Senators argue that expediting and streamlining the processing of DACA applications, both new applications and those to extend the permit, is important primarily because many Dreamers are essential workers who contribute greatly to the socio-economic development of the nation. Other than that, the country is going through a recovery stage after the sharp economic downturn resulting from the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, the senators state that “As we work to build back our economy from the effects of the pandemic, reducing backlogs and processing delays for DACA cases is of the utmost importance”.

DACA recipients ask for guarantees for their future

DACA recipients, and Dreamers in general, hope that the situation will change under Joe Biden’s administration so that they can have permanent guarantees or solutions for their future.

For its part, the Biden administration indeed plans to protect Dreamers, especially since they are essential workers in all sorts of sectors and are part of different communities across the US.
