Refugees Have not Been Able to Come to the US

Refugees await the opportunity to come to the US

The current president of the US, Joe Biden, has a rather welcoming view on immigration compared to his predecessor, Donald Trump. Biden states that, apart from attracting talent from abroad for important sectors such as science and technology, the country also has an obligation to offer international assistance and viable solutions for the most vulnerable immigrant communities, especially those trying to flee from precarious situations such as persecution, violence, war, abuse or famine.

Two of the most important humanitarian programs in the US are the political asylum and the refugee program. These two alternatives are essentially the same, both offer protection to people who try to flee from persecution due to their race, political opinion, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, inter alia. However, refugees usually apply for international protection from other countries outside the US, while asylum seekers also meet the refugee definition, but can apply for international protection within the US.

The US government must establish an annual refugee limit for each FY (Fiscal Year – October / September). Former President Trump substantially lowered the refugee limit in recent years, setting a record for the lowest number in the country’s recent history. However, President Joe Biden promised to raise the annual refugee limit to 125,000, which would also set a record for the highest number in the country’s recent history.

In late January 2021, several current administration officials stated that President Biden planned to sign an executive order to increase the annual refugee limit. Thus, thousands of refugees, whose applications have already been approved, are still awaiting President Biden’s consent.

Refugees removed from flights to the US

According to a recent CNN report, hundreds of refugees are being removed from flights to the US because President Biden has not yet officially increased the annual refugee limit and, although their applications have already been approved, they have not been able to come to the country.

Many of them are fleeing truly precarious situations like war and violence and yearn to build a promising future, have better opportunities, and find economic and job stability in the US.

The Biden administration proposed to increase the refugee limit for fiscal year 2021 from 15,000, the limit set by former President Trump, to 65,000, but it has yet to be official through executive action.

According to official figures, more than 200 refugees around the world have been removed from flights to the US or their tickets have been rescheduled in the last two weeks. Therefore, they hope that the Biden government will act promptly so that they can protect their integrity and build a better future for their beloved ones.
