Poll finds battleground states support path to citizenship

A recent poll conducted by Democratic pollster Matt Barreto and Republican pollster Daron Shaw, which included 1,217 respondents, reveals where battleground states stand on immigration reform.

It is important to explain that, in this case, when we talk about immigration reform we are referring to the possibility of opening a path to legalization for immigrants residing in the US undocumented.

Regarding immigration, the poll focused on the immigration legislation included in Biden’s 2022 budget package, which proposes to open a path to citizenship for essential undocumented foreign workers.

What are battleground states?

The term battleground state refers to certain states that do not have a definitive political identity since the number of both Republican and Democratic voters is quite similar.

Therefore, the outcome of both national and local elections in these states is usually quite uncertain because the two political parties seem to be in a constant tie.

The poll was conducted in Arizona, Maine, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Michigan, West Virginia and Wisconsin. In addition, the poll also included 70 competitive districts in 16 states.

It is important to clarify that 323 respondents are from Arizona and, therefore, this state predominated in the poll results.

Let’s look at some of the most important findings:

  • 3 in 4 respondents support a path to citizenship for essential undocumented workers in the budget package.
  • A high percentage of Democratic voters support immigration reform, while the number of Republican voters is lower on this issue, but still a majority.
  • In Arizona, 79% of respondents support a path to citizenship for undocumented foreigners (98% Democrats and 56% Republicans).

Overall, the poll reveals that regardless of political party, most respondents agree with legalizing immigrants living in the US undocumented, especially when it comes to highly qualified or essential workers.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Dreamers (young immigrants who came to the US as children).
  • Certain beneficiaries of TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or DED (Deferred Enforced Departure).
  • Undocumented farmworkers.
  • Members of the construction and transportation industry.
