May Day Immigration Rally

Immigrant rally on Worker's Day

Immigrant rally on Worker’s Day

Every year since the 19th century, the US has celebrated Worker’s Day, commonly known as May Day, which takes place on May 1st. In fact, it is an internationally recognized date and many countries have similar traditions on this commemorative day to praise workers’ rights and economic progress.

As usual, on Saturday, May 1, 2021, thousands of people took to the streets across the US, not only to celebrate Worker’s Day, but also to ask the local government to expand benefits for workers from all kinds of communities, who constantly provide their services to boost the economy amid the global health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

On this occasion, several immigrant populations came together and raised their voices during Worker’s Day, calling for permanent solutions for undocumented workers who are part of all kinds of sectors, from science and technology, to agriculture, construction and the US food supply chain.

In fact, hundreds of immigrants traveled from different parts of the country to gather outside the White House on Saturday and ask the Biden administration to offer a path to legal permanent residence or citizenship to undocumented foreigners, who work tirelessly and keep the economy afloat, including DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, farmworkers, inter alia.

According to the opinion an immigrant who participated in Saturday’s rally, “We need you to act now, no more deportations, no more family separations, you need to pass a pathway to citizenship for all”.

Do you have a pending immigration case? Take expert advice

The last four years were quite difficult for the immigration sector, not only because of the massive COVID-19 outbreak, which took place since the beginning of 2020, but also because former President Donald Trump used all the resources at his disposal to narrow humanitarian programs for vulnerable immigrant populations and hinder all kinds of immigration processes, from programs available for highly skilled workers to family members of American citizens.

Therefore, now that there is a new administration leading the White House (Biden-Harris), immigrant communities expect radical changes on the immigration system, including comprehensive reform to restructure existing processes and pave the way to implement policies more in line with current global needs.

Adding to that, the health risk is gradually decreasing thanks to the national vaccination project and the Biden administration now has the opportunity to remove Trump’s restrictions, streamline certain processes to reduce the backlog of immigration cases in the US, expand alternatives for foreign workers without affecting the American population and offer international protection to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
