Lawmakers Call on Biden to Expedite Immigration Proposals

Latino lawmakers urge Biden to push for immigration reform

On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, during a meeting that took place in the White House, several Latino lawmakers asked President Joe Biden to press for the approval of certain immigration proposals, including the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants, who are essential for the economic system and for the development and growth of local companies. With this, Latino lawmakers hope the Biden administration will offer legal documentation to certain foreign farmworkers, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, young immigrants brought to the US as children (known as Dreamers) and other essential workers.

Latino lawmakers stated that, if necessary, the Biden administration should use reconciliation to expedite the process and offer permanent solutions to essential undocumented workers.

It is important to explain that the term reconciliation refers to a process created decades ago under the “Congressional Budget Act of 1974”. Broadly speaking, the reconciliation process allows the passage of certain eligible legislation without obtaining 60 votes in the Senate (a branch of Congress), which is the regular process.

According to a CBS News report, President Biden was open to the idea of using reconciliation to expedite immigration proposals and turn them into law as soon as possible. However, on Wednesday, April 21, the Biden administration’s press secretary stated that, before using any other resource such as reconciliation, the president hopes to have bipartisan support in Congress, both in the US House of Representatives and the Senate, to move towards comprehensive immigration reform.
