The H-2B visa is available for temporary non-agricultural workers. This program allows local employers to hire personnel from abroad during high seasons in sectors such as culinary, hospitality, tourism, landscaping, inter alia.

The US usually issues a total of 66,000 H-2B visas annually, which are divided between the winter and summer seasons, when there is a higher demand for seasonal workers.

The DHS arguments

When implementing this new measure, the DHS Secretary explained “At a time of record job growth, additional H-2B visas will help to fuel our nation’s historic economic recovery”.

Under the new rule, out of the 20,000 extra H-2B visas, 6,500 will be available only to citizens from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Haiti.

A new opportunity to address labor shortages

This new measure will allow local businesses to effectively address labor shortages that threaten the country’s productivity and economic growth.

In fact, hiring seasonal foreign workers through the H-2B visa has always been an advantage for American employers, who go through acute labor shortages when foreign workers are not available.

It is worth clarifying that, in order to hire foreign workers on this visa, local employers must demonstrate that American workers are not available and that they will pay foreign workers the same. Therefore, when local companies decide to use this program, it is because they really need it.
