Chinese Students Face Obstacles to Come to the US

Trump’s travel ban and his focus on China

It has been already one year since the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic to the world. Humanity is going through a sanitary emergency without precedent in recent history and it caused a global crisis, not only a health crisis, but also a political, social, cultural, humanitarian and economic crisis.

One of the countries most affected by the health emergency is the US, which is still the main epicenter of the pandemic. The arrival of COVID-19 to the North American territory was sudden and took the Trump administration by surprise. Adding to that, the number of infected people grew exponentially in a matter of weeks.

The Trump government had to implement multiple emergency measures to protect the local population, the health care system and the economy. For instance, in an attempt to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, the Trump administration implemented the travel ban as a strategy to prevent importation of the virus.

However, President Trump focused heavily on the travel ban against China, which, in his opinion, is the country that caused the global pandemic and spread the virus throughout the world. This premise that has been contradicted by experts on multiple occasions.

Chinese students try to come to the US

A high percentage of international students in the US come from China. Thousands of Chinese students decide to come to the country to complete their higher education and possibly gain work experience afterwards.

In fact, in the 2018-19 study period, more than a third of foreign students in the US came from China.

However, possibilities for them to obtain student permits at the US embassies in China are less now, since Trump’s travel ban does not allow the issuance of non-emergency visas at Chinese embassies and consulates.

It is important to clarify that thousands of Chinese students have already enrolled in American colleges and universities, but have not been able to come to the country due to immigration policies of the Trump administration.

Official figures:

  • According to official figures presented by Fortune, between April and September 2019, the US granted 90,410 visas to students from China.
  • However, after the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, the US granted only 808 visas to students from China in the same period of 2020.

What are Chinese students doing?

Since many Chinese students already have enrollment in American institutions, they decide to travel to other countries in order to get their student visas. According to the testimony of a Chinese student, “Some are trying to get a U.S. visa, and some have a U.S. visa already. They need to stay in another country for 14 days before returning to the U.S. because of the travel ban.”

Therefore, currently, they must go through adverse situations before they can arrive in the US to complete their higher education. Yet many of them hope the situation will change with the Joe Biden administration, who promised to lift Trump’s travel ban and ease tension with China.
