Central American President Blames Biden for the Border Situation

Guatemalan President comments on the US border situation

The border situation that threatens Biden’s immigration plans

One of the main focuses of the current administration of the US is to reform the entire immigration system in order to rebuild current policies, remove restrictions and limitations, expand the options available to foreign workers and students, and reshape humanitarian programs for extremely vulnerable immigrant communities such as asylum seekers and refugees.

However, during his first four months leading the White House, Democratic President Joe Biden has encountered a challenge unprecedented in recent history, a rather alarming border situation. During the first half of 2021, especially since February, the US has faced a surge of illegal border crossings. In fact, border apprehension rates for March, April and May set new records as they are the highest in decades.

Unsurprisingly, because Biden has a welcoming view when it comes to immigration in general, especially compared to the previous administration that tried to hinder and restrict immigration in the US, there is a part of the population that thinks that his administration is entirely responsible for the current border situation and levels of irregular migration from Central America.

Under these circumstances, many of Biden’s immigration plans are currently on hold and his administration is trying to improve the situation by all means possible, but it is a challenge that the US has always faced throughout history. Therefore, trying to curb mass irregular migration is not an easy task.

Guatemalan President comments on the US border situation

Naturally, the US’ current border situation is also drawing the attention of leaders across the region, especially as the Biden administration is trying to create international cooperation agreements to curb irregular migration from Central America.

On Wednesday June 9, 2021, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei commented on the surge of illegal crossings that is taking place at the US’ borders, just a few days after Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Central American territory (Mexico and Guatemala).

Giammattei stated that Harris’s message to (undocumented) Central American migrants, on this occasion, was indeed clear and direct, but he openly argued that “if you have a lukewarm message, it only creates the opportunity to misinterpret”. Therefore, according to a Fox News report, the Guatemalan president blamed the Biden administration for sending misleading messages that increased irregular migration and held it entirely responsible for the current border situation.
