Harris’s Message to Migrants in Central America

VP Harris sends a clear message to Central American migrants and leaders

Vice President Harris faces a mammoth task

The disproportionate rise in irregular migration levels that has taken place since late 2020, but intensified in early 2021, has threatened and challenged immigration ideals and plans of Democratic President Joe Bien, who took office in late January.

Most, if not all, opposition groups entirely blame the Biden administration for the surge of illegal border crossings, arguing that the combination of removing former President Trump’s restrictive policies and sending a welcoming message to immigrant communities in general encouraged and increased massive irregular migration.

However, the Biden administration states that, on the one hand, crossing borders without prior authorization will not be accepted in the US and, on the other hand, that irregular migration is also related to other influencing factors apart from local policies such as corruption, violence and lack of opportunities in certain vulnerable territories.

Therefore, to effectively address the border situation, President Biden delegated Vice President Kamala Harris to curb mass migration from Central America and carry out international cooperation strategies to reduce migration levels without implementing arbitrary or restrictive policies.

VP Harris travels to Central America to address the root causes of mass migration

After several months, VP Harris has had multiple meetings with leaders from the region, especially from Central American countries, which have the highest levels of irregular migration to the US, but had not yet traveled to the borders or other territories to witness the real situation.

However, on June 6, 2021, VP Harris traveled to Central American territory for the first time to efficiently address the root causes of mass irregular migration, which are intrinsically related to unsustainable local conditions that force thousands of people to leave their countries of origin to seek opportunities in North America. The problem is that, more often than not, they do it without legal documentation and that fact is what creates a gigantic controversy and debate.

VP Harris sends a clear message to Central American migrants and leaders

On Monday, June 7, in Guatemala, VP Harris sent a direct and clear message to migrants who want to enter the US without prior authorization, “I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come. Do not come”.

Harris explained that it does not mean that immigrants are not welcome, but that irregular migration will not be tolerated under any circumstances and that the US will continue to enforce immigration law and protect the border territory.

The main focus of VP Harris during her visit to Guatemala and Mexico was to emphasize the need to create international cooperation agreements to offer a better environment for Central American citizens and prevent them from migrating to North America. In fact, among other things, Vice President Harris stated that the US will:

  • Send COVID-19 vaccines to Mexico and Guatemala (1 million and 500,000 respectively).
  • Help reduce corruption and other risky practices through an anti-corruption task force.
  • Donate $40 million to improve the education system and increase economic opportunities for indigenous communities, especially women and girls.
