Texas Governor Proposes Continuing Border Wall Construction

Texas Governor plans to build the border wall

The Biden Administration Halted Border Wall Construction

It is well known that immigration has been a mainstay for both the previous administration, led by former Republican President Donald Trump, and the current administration, led by Democratic President Joe Biden. Both administrations state that immigration is one of the most important and controversial sectors in the US and, therefore, needs special and constant attention.

Nevertheless, these two administrations have a diametrically opposite stance regarding the local immigration system and foreign populations in general. Broadly speaking, on the one hand, the Trump administration proposed reducing immigration levels in the US, arguing that the massive flow of foreigners is detrimental to the local population. On the other hand, the Biden administration plans to expand legal immigration programs as a strategy to decrease irregular migration levels, arguing that the presence of foreigners from all over the world is an advantage and a strength for the nation.

One of the main plans of former President Trump, which gained much popularity among the American population, was to complete the construction of a border wall that separates the US from Mexico. This border wall was intended to curb massive irregular migration.

However, one of Biden’s first actions as the country’s president was to halt the border wall construction in early 2021, stating that such policies were “arbitrary and capricious” and did not effectively address the root causes of illegal migration. Naturally, like Trump during his term, the Biden administration has received countless criticism for abandoning the construction of the border wall.

Texas Governor plans to build the border wall

On Thursday, June 10, 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who belongs to the Republican political party, stated that he plans to continue building a portion of the border wall in Texan territory despite the Biden administration’s disagreement.

Adding to that, Governor Abbott also proposes to increase surveillance at the borders through a Task Force on Border and National Security, as well as the allocation of funds (1 billion) for border protection.

Abbott explained that Texas cannot sit still as the US faces the highest surge of illegal border crossings in decades. In fact, the Governor openly stated, “While securing the border is the federal government’s responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows. The state is working collaboratively with communities impacted by the crisis to arrest and detain individuals coming into Texas illegally”.
