Border Apprehensions in April: The Number is Still High

The number of border encounters is still high

The border situation has been national news for a considerable period of time. By this, we refer to a surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since late 2020, but worsened in early 2021, just when Democratic President Joe Biden took office.

In March 2021, CBP, Customs and Border Protection, reported the highest number of border apprehensions in 15 years, sparking a gigantic social controversy and putting Biden’s immigration plans and proposals at risk. During that month, CBP detained a total of 172,331 undocumented immigrants, including 18,733 unaccompanied minors.

The Biden administration states that expelling unaccompanied immigrant children amid an unprecedented global health crisis is “inhumane and violates human rights”. Therefore, it has tried to handle the situation using all the tools at it disposal, but it has also had to face criticism and challenges due to the lack of facilities and resources to house minors, although the situation has gradually improved.

Returning to the issue of illegal border crossings, CBP recently released official figures for April 2021 and surprisingly, the number of apprehensions did not drop, but neither did they rise as expected. Border entities detained a total of 178,622 undocumented immigrants in April, including 17,171 minors, a decrease of 8.34%.

Other than that, the Biden administration hopes that, now that Vice President Harris is leading the project to reduce irregular migration levels, the number of border encounters will decrease over the next several months.

Is the Biden administration entirely responsible for irregular immigration?

Since President Biden has a rather welcoming view on immigration, several opposition groups and part of the population entirely blame his administration for the surge of illegal border crossings, but is it really the case?

The change of administrations is naturally an influencing factor on the immigration sector in general, mainly because we are talking about two governments that have a diametrically opposite stance regarding immigrant communities. Former President Trump did not support humanitarian programs such as political asylum, but wanted to implement a merit-based immigration system. For his part, President Biden stated that immigration is an advantage and a strength for the US.

However, apart from the change of administration, there are also many other factors that force thousands of people to flee their countries and, unfortunately due to the lack of information, legal representation or reliable sources, they try to enter the US without legal documentation.

To give a specific example, the global Coronavirus pandemic tremendously affected the Central American territory, worsening a pre-existing economic crisis, which became an influential factor in mass irregular immigration.
