Audio Documentary Comments on Trump’s Immigration Policies

The Intercept Released Audio Documentary About Trump's Immigration Vision

The transformation of the US immigration system

Since the US, and North America in general, is the destination of thousands of foreigners seeking job opportunities,  good quality of life, protection, a better future, social security and access to a stable economy, immigration has always been a controversial topic.

On the one hand, a part of the population argues that immigration negatively affects the US and that foreigners often fill job positions and use social benefits that should be available only to American citizens. They tend to support more conservative ideas when it comes to immigration.

On the other hand, a part of the population argues that immigration contributes greatly to the socioeconomic development of the US since foreigners tend to work in essential sectors of the local market, boosting the economy, creating jobs, innovating and bringing talent from abroad. Adding to that, they argue that there are immigrant communities that need international protection because they go through adverse circumstances in their countries and it is the American government’s duty to offer them support.

Normally, governments tend to transform the migration system depending on their vision and opinion. For instance, speaking specifically about the Donald Trump administration, which has used immigration as a linchpin for almost four years, it has substantially transformed immigration processes.

The Intercept released audio documentary about Trump’s immigration vision

The Intercept is a journalism organization dedicated to the analysis and investigation of politics, wars, criminal justice, environment, inter alia. It is known for using “fearless and adversarial journalism,” which calls into question government protocols and holds entities involved in investigations accountable.

This organization carried out a documentary series called “American Mythology: The Presidency of Donald Trump” and in October 2020, released part two of this audio documentary called: “Administration of Xenophobia.”

Through this analysis, The Intercept explains in detail changes implemented by the current administration on the immigration sector since President Trump took office in 2017 and even earlier, during his political campaign.

This investigation exposes President Trump’s comments about Central American immigrants, Muslim communities, undocumented foreigners, and immigrant families, which the organization labels a “xenophobic posture toward immigrants.”

Jeremy Scahill, who is hosting the audio documentary, along with immigration experts and critics, comments that the Trump administration has implemented hundreds of changes, which are likely to last during several administrations as many of them are small and almost unrecognizable.

As Scahill states, “Trump has been able to leverage the existing immigration enforcement system to push harsh policies that not only aim to deter, but to systematically subject people to uncertainty and cruelty.”

Adding to that, the research also compares the Trump administration with previous presidents such as Barack Obama and George Bush, explaining that changes from the current administration are more notorious because they are more aggressive, but that, during past administrations, the number of deportations was higher.
