ICE to Deport Immigrant Women Involved in Medical Scandal

ICE tries to deport witnesses to medical scandal at detention center

Power granted by the government to border forces

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, among its many tasks, has the obligation to oversee immigration detention centers across the US. These facilities house hundreds of undocumented immigrants who have pending deportation proceedings or await the response to their immigration appeals.

This border entity normally takes, to these detention centers, both immigrants detained at the borders and immigrants who managed to cross them without legal documentation and reside in the country. In fact, ICE periodically conducts operations to arrest foreigners, most of whom do not have legal permits and have criminal records.

During Donald Trump’s term, ICE has the power and the right to carry out exhaustive investigations to locate hundreds of undocumented immigrants, as well as carry out mass detention operations and then initiate deportation proceedings in the shortest possible time.

Naturally, due to protocols implemented by ICE and ideals of the Trump administration when it comes to immigration, this federal agency is constantly in the midst of multiple legal processes, social controversies, and scandals.

Medical scandal in immigration detention center

In mid-September, a nurse, who used to work at a Georgia-based immigration detention center, stated that one of the gynecologists in charge of assisting detainees was removing their uteri (hysterectomy or sterilization) without any valid reason or explanation since they did not have symptoms or problems in their reproductive organs indicating the need for this type of procedure, which makes it impossible for them to have children in the future.

Clearly, due to the severity of the accusation, this news went viral in a matter of hours and hundreds of activists, immigrant rights advocates, senators, critics, humanitarian organizations, and immigration attorneys asked the government for an explanation and investigation into of this worrying situation, for which multiple investigations are currently being conducted simultaneously by members of Congress and the Office of Inspector General (OIG).

ICE tries to deport witnesses to medical scandal at detention center

According to a VICE News report, ICE is attempting to deport immigrant women who are key witnesses in investigations of massive hysterectomies at Georgia’s immigration detention center.

Several women who want to testify about their experiences with the doctor, accused of mistreating more than 50 immigrant women, have received letters from ICE stating that they must face deportation proceedings, which could happen before they can be part of the investigation.

The concern of dozens of congressmen and attorneys is that ICE is trying to cover up the evidence to avoid legal problems or inconveniences. In fact, an immigration attorney involved in the case states that “There has been a policy choice to allow the system that deports people without allowing them to testify or allowing government to investigate what happened to them (…) The consequence is that they essentially complete the obstruction of evidence.”
