Arizona Board Votes to Offer Transportation to Asylum Seekers

Pima County Board of Supervisors vote to transport asylum seekers

Asylum seekers already entering the US

Over the past four years (2017-2021), American citizens and immigrant communities have witnessed how the Donald Trump administration substantially restricted alternatives available to vulnerable populations such as asylum seekers and refugees.

To give a specific example, in 2019, former President Trump signed an agreement with Mexico called MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol), commonly known as “Remain in Mexico”. This policy did not allow asylum seekers to enter the US before receiving a response to their immigration cases, but, instead, they had to remain in Mexican territory during the process, which can take several months or even more than a year.

However, one of the current administration’s first actions, with President Joe Biden leading, was to suspend the MPP and introduce a resettlement plan to help asylum seekers who had to remain in Mexico under this policy, even in the midst of the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Thanks to Biden’s resettlement project, hundreds of asylum seekers have already entered the US since February 19, 2021, when it took effect. Currently, several non-governmental entities and non-profit organizations, especially from border states, are creating strategies to improve conditions for asylum seekers without affecting the well-being of the American population.

Pima County Board of Supervisors vote to transport asylum seekers

On March 24, 2021, in an effort to improve the asylee resettlement system, the Pima County (Arizona) Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to contract with transportation companies to transfer asylum seekers when they are released by Border Patrol agents.

Until now, certain non-governmental organizations have been assisting asylum seekers, but are currently asking the local government for help due to limited resources to transport asylum seekers.

Therefore, the Board of Supervisors plans to create strategies with different companies to transport asylum seekers from certain border regions to Tucson.
