America’s Success Is Linked to Immigration Reform

The US’ success also depends on undocumented immigrants

Since Democratic President Joe Biden took office at the end of January 2021, immigration reform has been a relevant issue among the American population. That it because the current president introduced a rather ambitious immigration bill during his first days in office, called the US Citizenship Act of 2021.

If Congress passes Biden’s bill for comprehensive immigration reform, which is quite unlikely at this point due to the surge of illegal border crossings, it would lead to the legalization of millions of immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented, that is, it would open a path to legal residency and eventually citizenship.

A recent report by The Economist reveals that legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants is essential to boost the national economy for decades to come and it is certainly not the first source to state the same.

According to The Economist, if Congress approves Biden’s proposal, nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants would be able to apply for legal documentation, which would add about $1.5 trillion to the US economy because about 8 million undocumented immigrants are workers in all kinds of sectors of the local market and the fact that they have to pay mandatory taxes after receiving legal documentation would undoubtedly be an exponential growth for the economy, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and federal funds.

The debate around undocumented immigrants is getting nowhere

The Economist report also reveals that even if Congress decides to pass other legislation that would not necessarily protect 11 million undocumented immigrants, but perhaps only essential workers or young people who were brought to the US as minors known as Dreamers, the country would still receive a gigantic economic benefit from this legitimization.

However, the debate within Congress is currently delaying the opportunity for the US to give eligible undocumented immigrants a chance to become part of the local social fabric. Adding to that, the differences of opinion between the political parties do not allow the branches of Congress to move forward on any of the multiple immigration bills currently on the table.

Therefore, as proposed by the Biden administration, it might be more effective for Congress to move forward on legislation that it deems necessary, important and already has bipartisan support, allowing at least some progress on the local immigration system.
