American Public Supports Path to Citizenship for Undocumented Foreigners

Local population increasingly supports the idea of offering benefits to undocumented immigrants

American citizenship for undocumented immigrants

President Joe Biden’s stance when it comes to the immigration sector and his proposals to improve the way the federal government approaches immigration have created uncertainty among the American population, primarily because some of his goals involve offering immigration benefits to undocumented foreigners, which usually sparks a gigantic social controversy.

The Biden administration recently released an immigration bill, which, if passed by Congress, would offer a path to American citizenship for eligible undocumented immigrants. Biden’s immigration bill, which was introduced in pieces to prevent Congress from rejecting the entire proposal, states that the US must integrate and include undocumented foreigners in its social structure to keep the economy afloat as most of them are essential workers.

Adding to that, the Biden administration plans to offer immediate legal permanent residence to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, and undocumented farmworkers, as long as they meet mandatory requirements.

In fact, a recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University reveals that among 1,075 adults:

  • 83% of voters support Biden’s proposal to offer a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who came to the US as minors, popularly known as “Dreamers”.
A large portion of Dreamers currently residing in the US are enrolled in the DACA program, which offers them temporary protection from deportation.
  • 65% of voters state that immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented should be able to stay in the country and eventually apply for American citizenship, while 20% of voters state that undocumented immigrants should leave of the US and 9% of voters state that undocumented immigrants may remain in the country, but should not have the possibility to apply for American citizenship.

Aside from the issue of irregular immigration and citizenship for undocumented foreigners, the poll also asked the American people for their views on Biden’s decision to lift Trump’s Muslim Ban, which banned the entry of nationals from more than 10 countries, mostly Muslim, to the US. 57% of voters support Biden’s decision to remove Trump’s Muslim Ban.

Important fact

It is important to remember that this is not the first poll to reveal that the American population increasingly supports the idea of offering a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
