Advocates State Biden is Giving up on Immigration

Advocates say Biden should push harder for immigration reform

Biden’s address to Congress and the immigration sector

Since President Joe Biden took office relatively recently (January 20, 2021), the American public’s attention is heavily focused on his actions during the first 100 days as President of the US.

One of the most important sectors for the Biden administration is immigration. In fact, not only did President Biden unveil a rather ambitious immigration bill during his first days in office, but he has tripled the number of immigration-related executive actions compared to former President Donald Trump during his first 100 days.

Because some pieces of legislation must first be reviewed and passed by Congress to be officially implemented, the Biden administration has not been able to move forward as it would like with its immigration plans. Therefore, to streamline the process and request bipartisan support to promote comprehensive immigration overhaul, President Biden asked Congress, during his first 100-day speech, to end the debate and reach positive agreements that benefit both the American population and essential foreign workers, including undocumented immigrant communities.

Advocates say Biden should push harder for immigration reform

Initially, before taking office and during his first weeks, President Joe Biden was optimistic about the immigration sector and supported the ideal of restructuring the entire immigration system as soon as possible. However, the outlook has changed for the Biden administration due to controversy within Congress, related to its immigration bill, and a surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since early February 2021.

During his address to Congress, President Biden openly stated, “If you don’t like my plan, let’s at least pass what we all agree on”. To dozens of immigrant rights advocates and activist groups, this sentence means that President Biden is “giving up” on immigration and that now, in their opinion, instead of supporting all undocumented immigrants, he only plans to support a portion of them, including Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US as minors, and undocumented farmworkers.
