100 Days into Presidency – Biden’s Impact on Immigration

What are Biden's executive actions on immigration so far?

Immigration as a Pillar of Joe Biden’s Political Campaign

Like former President Donald Trump, immigration is also a mainstay for President Joe Biden, but in a diametrically opposite way. The current president, who took office almost 100 days ago, has always emphasized the need to promote comprehensive immigration reform to implement more humane policies in line with current international needs.

Since late January 2021, the Biden administration has issued a series of executive orders to remove the Trump administration’s restrictive policies in order to pave the way to improve the immigration system and expand benefits and alternatives available to immigrant communities, without affecting the well-being of the local population.

What has Biden done on the immigration system?

Regarding what President Biden has done on the US immigration system, there are several points to consider such as the fact that many of his proposals need support from Congress or other government branches. Despite that, President Biden has used every tool at his disposal to transform the immigration system as soon as possible.

In fact, according to a Fox News report, the number of executive orders issued by President Biden triples those of his predecessor Donald Trump in his first 100 days. To understand the magnitude of this fact, it is important to mention that former President Trump made more than 400 changes to the immigration system in four years, setting a record as the administration that has modified the immigration system the most through all kinds of executive actions.

Thus, if the Biden administration continues at its current pace, it could set a new record for the immigration sector. In fact, in his first 100 days, President Biden has issued 94 immigration-related executive actions, while former President Trump issued fewer than 30 in his first 100 days. However, it is worth clarifying that many of Biden’s executive actions are intended to remove Trump’s restrictions on immigration, therefore, they do not count as new actions but rather as revocation actions.

What are Biden’s executive actions on immigration so far?

According to an AP News report, President Biden made 17 major promises related to the immigration sector before taking office, involving all kinds of immigrant communities and existing processes, from employment-based options for highly qualified foreign workers, to undocumented immigrants and vulnerable populations such as refugees and asylum seekers.

Let’s look at some important facts:

  • During his first 100 days in office, President Biden has kept 7 of 17 promises he made during his political campaign, including sending an immigration bill to Congress, creating a project to reunite immigrant families separated at the borders and halting the construction of the border wall.
  • Although he has only fully fulfilled 7 promises, there are 9 promises that are already on the way and have been partially fulfilled such as reforming the asylum system, expediting the naturalization process and ending prolonged immigrant detention.

During his first 100 days in office, there is only one promise that could not be kept due to court intervention and that is Biden’s moratorium on deportations.
