White House Plans to Expedite Green Card Process

Biden plans to reduce backlogs in Green Card processing

On Friday, October 8, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated that President Biden intends to address backlogs in Green Card applications.

To understand the issue at hand, it is important to explain that Green Cards grant legal permanent residency to immigrants who meet certain eligibility criteria.

During the press conference, when a reporter asked about what the President thought regarding unused Green Cards during fiscal year 2021 (October-September), Psaki stated that “The President absolutely wants to address the delays in the green card processing system as well”.

It is worth mentioning that the US grants a certain number of Green Cards annually, which may be based on employment, family ties, inter alia. However, due to multiple influential factors such as the global Coronavirus pandemic, there were about 80,000 Green Cards that went unused during fiscal year 2021.

The problem with this is that there are hundreds of thousands of foreigners waiting for an opportunity to obtain their Green Cards and waiting times are usually quite long. Therefore, the country did not issue this vast amount of available Green Cards, but at the same time has not done much to streamline and optimize the process for applicants.

Improving the immigration system is a priority

The fact that the White House has openly stated that it plans to improve Green Card application processing is extremely positive news for immigrant communities in the US, especially for highly qualified foreign workers and family members of American citizens or LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents), who sometimes must wait years to receive their Green Cards.

Adding to that, if the current administration of the US expedites the Green Card process, it could also focus on improving the legal immigration system in general, which would allow it to effectively address the backlog of immigration cases nationwide and gradually remove the bureaucratic hurdles that exponentially increase waiting times for most immigration processes.
