Heads of top universities support pathway to citizenship

The heads of 5 leading Florida universities recently commented on the imperative need to open a path to citizenship for young immigrants known as Dreamers, who came to the US as minors and who, until now, have only had temporary protection from deportation despite having resided in North America for most of their lives.

The only direct option available to these young immigrants is DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a deportation relief program that protects eligible Dreamers for two years with the possibility of extension.

Since 2012, DACA has protected hundreds of thousands of Dreamers. However, on July 2021, a federal judge in Texas suspended new DACA applications, leaving many young immigrants in limbo.

Returning to the subject of Florida Universities, the directors state that local students who are Dreamers have become an inspiration to the US’ education sector and deserve the opportunity to apply for legal residency.

In fact, they openly state, “Among our best students are thousands of Florida college students with incredible potential whose bright futures stand to be eclipsed if Congress fails to create a pathway to citizenship.

More voices unite in support of immigration reform

Florida’s university directors are not the only ones calling on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform through Biden’s 2022 budget package, which has already passed the US House of Representatives.

Several humanitarian organizations, immigrant rights advocates and activist groups also state that the most effective way to improve the local immigration system at this time is to open a path to citizenship for young immigrants, who have not only lived in North America for as long as they can remember, but are also essential workers and contribute greatly to the development and growth of local businesses.

Adding to that, many experts state that legalizing essential undocumented workers like most Dreamers would be an essential step to boost the economy during the recovery process the US is going through amid the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
