Undocumented Immigrants Expect Changes with the Biden Administration

Immigrants yearn for the Biden government to deliver on its promises

The Biden administration opens a door of hope for immigrants

Immigration has always been a controversial topic in the US and a priority for the last two administrations, but in a diametrically opposite way. On the one hand, the Trump administration used all the tools at its disposal to reduce immigration, arguing that the federal government’s duty is to protect the American population and the national interest.

On the other hand, the Biden administration states that immigration is in the national interest as thousands of local companies rely heavily on foreign workforce. Therefore, since the current president took office on January 20, 2021, he has also used every tool at his disposal to improve the current immigration system and expand available alternatives for foreign workers to come to the US.

The current administration is initially focusing on removing Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration system in order to have a chance to promote comprehensive immigration reform.

Biden plans to offer citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants

As an essential part of his political campaign, President Biden introduced an immigration bill for Congress approval, which includes a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants currently residing in the US without legal documentation.

The process would work as follows:

  1. Undocumented immigrants would have the opportunity to initially apply for a temporary legal permit.
  2. After five years, and meeting the mandatory requirements, immigrants would have the possibility to apply for a Green Card and become LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents).
  3. Three years after obtaining the Green Card, they could apply for American citizenship if they meet the mandatory requirements and pay annual taxes.

It is important to clarify that, apart from offering citizenship to undocumented immigrants in a time frame of 8 years, Biden’s immigration bill also includes many other important aspects of the immigration sector such as the detention and deportation system, protection and surveillance at the borders to reduce irregular immigration, humanitarian programs such as political asylum or refuge, inter alia.

Immigrants yearn for the Biden government to deliver on its promises

According to the testimony of dozens of immigrants interviewed by CNN, they hope the Biden administration will fulfill its promises regarding immigration and the current president’s first executive actions definitely open a door of hope for them.

With this, we refer to different immigrant populations, such as:

  • DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients. This program protects young undocumented immigrants, who came to the US as children, from deportation. The Trump administration tried to remove DACA on multiple occasions.
  • Undocumented immigrants who pay annual taxes, who have had to hide in sanctuary cities or churches to avoid deportation.

Many of them have been in the US for years, even decades, and expect more guarantees for their future under the Biden administration, although they know that the process might not be easy.
