Expert comments on the damage caused by Trump’s immigration policies

Angela Naomi Paik is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois (UI), specialized in Asian American Studies and History of Gender and Women. Adding to that, she is the author of “Bans, Walls, Raids, Sanctuary: Understanding U.S. Immigration for the Twenty-First Century,” which was published in May, 2020.

The UI publishes a weekly report in a section called Illini Insider, where they talk about social, controversial and political topics. On Thursday, November 12, the Ilini Insider report was about immigration, in which A. Naomi Paik participated.

Broadly speaking, Naomi talks about what the future of immigration policies look like after President Donald Trump leaves office and Joe Biden, the president-elect of the US, takes office in January 2021.

Naomi states that, initially, the most important thing is for the Biden administration to reverse Trump’s immigration policies that violate human rights and endanger the integrity and safety of the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

That includes, but is not limited to:

  • Legal action against Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a benefit that protects immigrants, who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors, from deportation.
  • Muslim ban.
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention operations in sanctuary cities or jurisdictions.
  • Legal action against student immigration and foreign students.
  • Public Charge Rule.
  • The construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico.
  • Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico”.

She clarifies that apart from policies mentioned above, the Trump administration implemented hundreds of changes in the immigration system, increasing restrictions and requirements for foreigners to enter the country legally.

Naomi’s opinion regarding the repercussions of Trump’s policies

When Naomi talks about immigration policies implemented by the Trump administration, she states that “The damage is so tremendous, and so deep, it is mind-boggling.”

She assures that repercussions of these policies on a personal and human level, beyond figures, political ideals and analysis, are devastating. The separation of immigrant families at the borders, thanks to Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”, will have lifelong consequences for immigrant minors and their parents.

Adding to that, she mentions mass detention of undocumented immigrants and scandals the Trump administration has been involved in for keeping unaccompanied minors in hotels before deportation and unnecessary hysterectomies (uterus removal) in immigrant women detained by border forces.

She hopes that the Biden administration will reverse policies implemented by Trump, but knows that some of the repercussions of his policies go beyond an executive order as they affect the future and development of immigrant communities.

Avoid precarious situations, protect your future and follow experts’ advice

Most policies implemented by the Trump administration aim to curb illegal immigration. However, the legal system offers multiple alternatives for you and your family to migrate to the US following parameters established by local law.

In this way, by following legal processes, you protect your future and avoid adverse situations, which could put your safety at risk.
