Trump’s Refugee Limit Still in Place

Biden hasn't changed the annual refugee limit yet

Biden hasn’t changed the annual refugee limit yet

One of the most prominent differences between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden is their stance and opinion regarding immigration. On the one hand, it is well known that Trump wanted to reduce immigration at all costs and implemented hundreds of policies that substantially transformed the immigration system and narrowed alternatives available to all kinds of foreign populations.

On the other hand, since President Biden launched his political campaign, long before winning the 2020 elections, he promised to broaden and expand immigration programs, including those that involve the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as refugees.

Since the US is a first world country and the destination of thousands of immigrants annually, the local government must establish a refugee limit for each fiscal year (October-September). For instance, former President Trump set the lowest refugee limit in the country’s recent history for fiscal year 2021, a total of 15,000 refugees.

President Biden promised to change the refugee limit for fiscal year 2021 after taking office and increase the figure to 125,000 beginning in fiscal year 2022, which would be the highest refugee limit in the country’s recent history.

However, it has been almost three months since Biden has led the White House and his administration has not announced any changes to the annual refugee limit, which has drawn the attention of activists and immigrant rights advocates.

Leaders call on Biden to increase FY 2021 refugee limit

Since the current administration has not yet raised the refugee cap, a group of more than 100 leaders from different communities sent a letter to President Biden on Tuesday, April 6, arguing that it is a priority to increase the refugee limit for fiscal year 2021 to 62,500 as soon as possible.

They state that the US is a land of opportunities and that, due to the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, millions of people have had to flee their homes and seek better opportunities in this North American country. On top of that, they openly state, “We also know intimately that refugee resettlement revitalizes our communities. We witness the positive impacts of refugee contributions on our communities every day, and as a part of a country built by immigrants, over generations.”

It is important to mention that, apart from the fact that former President Trump set the lowest refugee limit for 2021, the US has only received 2,050 refugees under the Biden administration and we are already in the middle of the fiscal year. If the refugee admission continues at the same current rate, the Biden administration would receive about 4,500 refugees by the end of fiscal year 2021, which would represent the lowest number in the country’s history.
