Thousands of Immigrants Will be Able to Vote in Philadelphia

2,200 immigrants will vote in Philadelphia after quick naturalization ceremonies

Delays in naturalization ceremonies

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about delays in naturalization ceremonies due to the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

These ceremonies are the last step for immigrants, who meet the mandatory requirements, to become legal citizens of the US.

However, due to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American Territory, the offices of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) closed for more than two months and face-to-face services, such as the naturalization ceremonies, were not available to the public.

The current problem is that the presidential elections will take place in November 2020 and due to delays in naturalization ceremonies, more than 315,000 immigrants will not be able to vote.

Dozens of activists state that delays in immigration processes helped the Trump administration to meet its agenda and reduce the number of immigrants who will be able to vote.

Philadelphia immigrants file a lawsuit

Thousands of immigrants currently residing in Philadelphia already had their naturalization ceremonies scheduled, but when the massive outbreak of COVID-19 arrived in the US, they were automatically rescheduled and significantly delayed.

Therefore, two immigrants decided to file a lawsuit requesting the local USCIS office to carry out pending naturalization ceremonies before the presidential election.

The lawsuit did not reach a local court as the USCIS decided to naturalize Philadelphia immigrants who had their ceremonies scheduled before the arrival of the global pandemic.

Thousands of immigrants will be able to vote in Philadelphia

Thanks to the quick reaction of the USCIS, more than 2,200 immigrants residing in Philadelphia will be able to vote in the 2020 presidential elections and will help with their opinion to choose the next leader of the nation.

This is hopeful news for immigrant communities residing around the country, and the USCIS offices in other cities may decide to do the same as Philadelphia and naturalize immigrants who have been waiting for their ceremony more than four months already.
