The Trump Administration Expedites Border Wall Construction

The Trump administration speeds up construction after presidential election

The border wall as a cornerstone of the Trump campaign

One of the most striking proposals of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to win the 2016 elections was the construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico. This proposal received multiple reactions from the local population, both positive and negative.

What drove this political proposal was the Trump administration’s opinion on immigration, especially illegal. President Trump assures that the government has the obligation to curb illegal immigration to protect American workers, the local economic system and essential resources. Thus, the border wall, in his opinion, protects the US territory and prevents massive illegal immigration from Central America.

Currently, according to official figures from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the wall is 402 miles long and the Trump administration plans to continue building it, at least until the end of the year.

The Trump administration speeds up construction after presidential election

The US presidential election took place on November 3, 2020 and the American population elected Joe Biden, nominee for the Democratic political party, as the next leader of the country, who will take office in January 2021.

Election results were released on Saturday, November 7, and the Trump administration expedited construction of the border wall in South Texas just three days later, on November 10.

According to official statements, CBP is currently building parts of the wall that were previously funded during fiscal year 2020 (October-September). The Trump administration already funded approximately 738 miles.

Adding to that, CBP officials state that even if Joe Biden is the president-elect, the federal agency can continue to build it with funding from the Trump administration because there are contracts involved.

However, two congressmen from South Texas state that federal law allows the annulment of contracts and a conciliation with companies involved. However, CBP argues that “Since the U.S. Border Patrol began constructing border barriers nearly 30 years ago, these barriers have proved to be a critical component in gaining operational control of the border and allowing for greater efficiency of manpower.”

What does the Biden government say?

The president-elect has stated on multiple occasions that he will stop the construction of the border wall, he will no longer invest in this purpose, but that he will not destroy or remove what the Trump administration has built.

Therefore, his administration will have to decide what the next step will be regarding existing contracts and the financing of the border wall by the Trump government.
