The Role of Immigration in the US Population Growth

Immigration is also one of the pillars of local population growth

What has the National Census shown us regarding immigration?

The National Census is carried out every 10 years in the US and one of its main purposes is to analyze the birth rate and population growth of each state and as a nation, which is also related to economic behavior, immigrant communities, allocation of federal funds and the distribution of seats in Congress.

In view of the above, the 2020 National Census revealed that population growth over the last decade was 7.4%, which is the lowest figure since 1930, eight decades ago. As a result, multiple researches, reports and analyses have been conducted since the beginning of 2021, which aim to understand what are the factors that led to the reduction in the local birth rate and what could be the possible repercussions on the economy and the American population in general.

Many of the results of these analyses demonstrate that low population growth between 2010 and 2020 in the US is strongly related to immigration. As a matter of fact, in several of our most recent articles, we have discussed the National Census numbers and how they are closely linked to immigration levels in North America, local policies, and the region’s immigration system.

Let’s look at some important points:

  • Population growth over the last decade in the US is also related to immigration. In other words, the fact that immigration levels declined substantially under the Trump administration (2017-2021) also contributed to the low population growth.
  • By 2030, one in five American citizens will be of retirement age. However, if immigration levels do not increase, there will not be enough working-age population by then, even if the local birth rate increases.
  • National Census results reveal that immigration is intrinsically linked to the national economy.
  • Without immigrants and stable population growth, the US cannot compete against other world powers such as China.

One of the main conclusions among the recent National Census studies is that, if immigration levels do not increase soon in the US, population density will not grow over the next decade because, even if American families had more children, this figure would not bring the retirement-age population into balance with the working-age population. This fact truly puts the country’s economic stability at risk.

Immigration is also one of the pillars of local population growth

Now, at this point we want to talk about what was the impact of immigration on the 2020 National Census results. While one could understand that the country needs to attract immigrants to increase population growth between 2020 and 2030, it is also important to know what was the impact of immigration during the last decade.

Well, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, immigration is responsible for between a third and half of the population growth that took place between 2010 and 2020 in the US. In other words, without the presence of immigrants, the country will not be able to keep the economy afloat, even more so now that the world is going through quite extreme global conditions due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

In fact, the report concludes that “Years of strong immigration could help offset fewer births”.
