Immigration Levels Must Rise to Increase Population Growth

How much should immigration increase to balance the census results?

National Census Reveals America Needs Immigrants

In several of our most recent articles, we have talked about the 2020 National Census results (which takes place every 10 years) and how immigration might be the solution to the low birth rate and population growth of the last decade.

Let’s look at some important facts:

  • Population growth in the last decade has been the lowest since 1930, eight decades ago.
  • The US’ population grew only 7.4% in the last decade, between 2010 and 2020.
  • With low levels of population growth, financial stability and the entire economic system of the US might be at risk.
  • With low levels of population growth, the gap between the working-age population and retirement-age population is widening, which could affect economic stimulation in the US.
  • One in five Americans will be of retirement age by 2030.
  • Even with a high birth rate over the next decade, the US will not reach the level it needs. The best alternative at this point is to increase immigration levels.

Therefore, the US government, in this case the Joe Biden administration, must act promptly and effectively to avoid workforce shortages when the most local citizens are of retirement age.

How much should immigration increase to balance the census results?

According to research by the National Immigration Forum, the US must expand local immigration programs and open its doors to foreign workers in all kinds of sectors to protect and at the same time boost the economy for decades to come. However, the real question is, how much should immigration levels rise?

The report reveals that the role of immigrants is essential in the socioeconomic growth of local businesses, but that, unfortunately, due to outdated policies and an anti-immigrant administration (Donald Trump / 2017-2021), immigration levels did not rise as they should during the last decade, affecting the national economy and allowing other countries to gain an advantage with the help of foreign workforce.

Therefore, after conducting an exhaustive investigation and taking into account the Census results, the National Immigration Forum concludes: “we project that at least a 37% increase in net immigration levels over those projected for fiscal year 2020 (approximately 370,000 additional immigrants a year) will help prevent the U.S. from falling into demographic deficit and socioeconomic decline”.

Illegal immigration vs legal immigration

Immigration has always been a controversial topic among the American population. However, the reality is that this social debate is mainly focused on irregular immigration, but the current administration should be talking about legal immigration processes to boost the economy in times of crisis.

In fact, it is possible that the Biden administration will transform the local immigration system if it continues the ideal of expanding legal immigration as a tool to decrease illegal immigration. This might increase legal immigration levels to protect not only retirement-age citizens, but the economic stability of the nation.
