The ICE “Citizens Academy” Receives Hundreds of Fake Applications

Activist organizations send bogus applications to ICE's "citizens academy"

The “Citizens Academy”

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about a project by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, called the “Citizens Academy”.

This academy is intended to teach American citizens most of the protocols used by ICE to detain undocumented immigrants around the US.

The duration of this course will be six weeks and if everything goes according to the plan, it will start in Chicago, in September 2020. In fact, ICE’s idea is to expand this academy to other cities across the country depending on how this first pilot session turns out.

However, this project unleashed gigantic opposition from immigrant rights advocates and activists. That is the case of Never Again Action, a Jewish organization that aims to fight “America’s cruel immigration policies”.

Never Again Action reacts against ICE’s academy

ICE enabled an online platform for citizens interested in attending the academy to submit their personal information and participate in the six-week course.

Never Again Action decided to send hundreds of applications to ICE, openly expressing its disagreement with this project and because of this, several activist organizations joined the cause.

Thus, ICE has received hundreds of fake applications for the “Citizens Academy”.

However, the border agency assures that the purposes of this program are merely informative and that “The main goal of the program is for participants to become familiar with how and why ICE carries out its mission”.

Activists mention that there is no need to teach methods and protocols to arrest undocumented foreigners. In fact, they argue that this could unleash a wave of violence between American citizens and immigrant communities awaiting a response to their immigration requests.

In addition to that, it is important to remember that we are still going through a massive outbreak of Coronavirus and in the opinion of activists, this is not the right time to create another social controversy.

The possible repercussions

Due to the current landscape regarding the ICE “Citizens Academy”, there are several possible outcomes.

Let’s see some of them:

  • The controversy sparked by the project may cause the border agency to postpone or reverse the academy to avoid social chaos.
  • If the academy is held, American citizens could receive the information without taking action on their own.
  • If the academy is held, American citizens may feel compelled to stop undocumented immigrants, which would unleash social chaos.

In conclusion, this project could generate several repercussions. However, for now, the border agency remains firm with the purpose of offering this course to citizens interested in learning about its methods.
