ICE Wants to Offer a Course for Citizens

ICE to launch "Citizen Academy" in September, 2020

ICE plans to train the population to arrest undocumented immigrants

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has multiple responsibilities regarding border protection, as well as specific tasks to reduce illegal immigration in the US.

For instance, ICE has the power to detain undocumented immigrants around the country to initiate deportation proceedings.

In addition to that, the current administration of the US, headed by President Donald Trump, has implemented multiple restrictions in the immigration sector and supports ICE to accelerate the captures of undocumented immigrants around the country.

Therefore, since President Trump took office in 2017, ICE has had more possibilities to increase border controls to reduce illegal immigration and increase deportation processes.

During July 2020, ICE announced that it would launch a six-week course for citizens who want to learn methods implemented by border forces to arrest undocumented immigrants.

ICE’s six-week course

ICE plans to start a project in September, 2020, called “Citizen Academy”. This course will be available to legal citizens who want to learn certain protocols implemented by the border agency.

Also, ICE ensures that the six-week course could help the local population to:

  • Learn self defense techniques.
  • Know the ICE procedures.
  • Make tours to ICE-supervised immigration detention centers.
  • Become familiar with firearms.
  • Carry out arrests of undocumented immigrants.

This proposal has sparked a gigantic controversy in the US and could still be revoked due to the social chaos it would possibly generate.

Multiple criticisms for the “Citizen Academy”

A considerable number of activists, immigrant rights advocates and critics around the country raised their voices and exposed their arguments against the six-week course offered by ICE.

For instance, an Illinois Democratic congressman stated: “is this a prank or fake news or what is this? This program would encourage people to act as vigilantes and racially profile community members. Not hard to think how this can lead to attacks and violence against immigrants and undocumented people”

In addition to that, the Organized Communities Against Deportations also raised their voices and published on Facebook a statement declaring that “ICE may be trying to clean their name under the guise of improving community relations but we know the truth (…) we ask people to join the movement against the agency responsible for the separation of families in our city and across the country”.

ICE’s response to criticism

ICE has yet to give any official response regarding the multiple criticisms received for the “Citizen Academy”.

However, an ICE spokesperson assures that this course is intended only to “educate community members“, without the repercussions being negative for the immigrant communities residing in the US.
